Toilet Partition Cleaning Hints and Tips

13-May-2011 After designing, planning and installing toilet partitions, proper maintenance and cleaning will extend their life and provide a hygienic and sanitary facility for years.  Routine cleaning of the surface material and hardware will help protect partition walls.  Knowing the materials the partition is made from will determine which cleaning procedure to follow.  Here are some tips on cleaning various toilet partitions based on their type.

Powder Coated Steel Partitions - Made from galvanized steel sheets which have been cemented and formed under pressure.

  • Clean with warm water and mild soap or detergent, using a cloth or sponge.
  • Rinse with clean water and dry with soft cloth.
  • Periodically wax with an automotive sealant to help preserve the surface’s finish.
Plastic Laminate Partitions - Made from particle board and finished in a resistant plastic laminate surface.

  • For dirt and smudges, use a mild cleansing solution on a non-abrasive cotton cloth.  Rinse and dry.
  • For greasy stains that are not removed with the use of a mild detergent, use a paste of baking soda and water.  With a clean cloth, rub the stain with the paste in small circular motion, remembering to dry the surface of the partition when the stain is removed.
  • Occasionally apply an application of standard furniture wax to keep the partitions looking new.
  • Liquid toilet bowl cleaners, bleaches, oven cleaners or laundry bleach should never be used to clean laminated plastic surfaces.
Solid Plastic Partitions (HDPE) - Made from a polymer, which is composed from an extruded polymer resin.

  • Clean with warm water and mild soap or detergent, using a cloth or sponge. Rinse and dry.
  • Periodically hose down the surface area with water for a more thorough cleaning. Be sure they are dry after being cleaned.
  • Cleaning agents containing abrasives, such as steel wool and harsh detergents are not recommended for cleaning HDPE partitions.
Solid Phenolic Core Partitions - Made from many layers of decorative papers which are saturated with a Phenolic resin.

  • Clean with warm water and mild soap or detergent, using a cloth or sponge.
  • For stains that are not removed with the use of mild detergent, use a paste of baking soda and water like the care of Plastic Laminate Partitions described above.
  • The use of an abrasive cloth or acidic cleaning solution is NOT recommended.
  • Periodic cleaning with a furniture polish will help keep the partitions looking new.
Stainless Steel Partitions - Made from type 304 stainless steel which is mounted to a honeycomb core.  The surface is finished with a satin or texture finish.

  • Clean with warm water and mild soap or detergent, and wipe dry.
  • Wipe or polish with the grain direction of satin finishes.
  • For stubborn spots or discoloration, use a liquid or spray stainless steel polish.  Rub spots, rinse and dry.
  • Avoid cleaning products containing bleach, toilet bowl or tile cleansers and abrasive scrubbing powders.
Keeping your toilet partitions clean should be a part of your regular building preventative maintenance procedure.  Given the proper care, using the tips above, toilet partitions and panels will retain their appearance for years.   You should always read the manufacturer’s guidelines and product descriptions for additional information about cleaning, maintaining, and repairing your toilet partitions.  It’s a small investment in time that could save you a lot of money over the long term.
